I SAID GOODBYE TO GOA AND DISCOVERED RAJASTHAN’S DESERT MAGIC
Everyone I know goes to Goa.
Beach. Beer. Repeat. Every summer. Every year. Same friends. Same beach shack. Same stories.
Nothing wrong with that. But after my fifth Goa trip, I realized something: I was becoming that friend. The one who talks about the same sunset at every party.
So I did something crazy.
I skipped Goa. Bought a train ticket to Jaisalmer. Packed light. Had no plans.
Three days later, sitting on a camel named Pappi, watching the Rajasthan desert turn every shade of orange at sunset, I understood why people write poems about this place.
THE RAJASTHAN REALITY (Unfiltered)
Let me be honest: Rajasthan isn’t a beach destination.
It’s HOT. (45°C in May. Your skin will protest.)
It’s DUSTY. (You’ll find sand in places you didn’t know existed. Still finding it, actually.)
The toilets can be… creative.
The food is 95% vegetarian.
There’s no nightlife. No clubs. No Instagram influencer spots.
But here’s the real truth: It’s also the most authentic, affordable, and absolutely stunning weekend escape you can do from any Indian city.
THE 3-DAY ITINERARY (Real Timing)
Day 1: Arrive & Float
10 AM: Arrive in Jaisalmer by train. Drop bag at guesthouse (₹400/night).
Hungry? First mistake most people make: They hit the fort immediately.
First smart move: Eat lunch first. Find any dhaba. Order “dal-bati-churma” (local comfort food). Costs ₹100. Tastes like home.
2 PM: Rest. Your body adjusted to the heat.
4 PM: Head to Jaisalmer Fort. Walk the narrow lanes. Get purposefully lost. This is the point.
You’ll find:
- Old ladies selling embroidered textiles from their homes
- Artisans making traditional juttis (shoes)
- Random chai shops with panoramic desert views
- Kids playing cricket in ancient courtyards
The fort isn’t a dead monument. It’s a living village. People actually live here. Kids go to school here. Life happens here.
5 PM: Rooftop café. Order chai. Wait.
6 PM: Sunset magic. The desert transforms. The fort glows orange. You understand why people sound dramatic about travel.
8 PM: Street food near the fort gate. Rajasthani thali (₹150). Enough for two people. Eat it alone.
10 PM: Sleep. The desert gets cold at night.
Day 2: Camel Safari & Desert Camp
6:30 AM: Meet your camel. I recommend naming it something ridiculous. (Mine was Pappi. Best decision ever.)
7:30 AM – 1 PM: Camel safari through Thar Desert.
Real talk: It’s bumpy. Bring paracetamol. It’s beautiful. Bring a camera. It’s authentic. Bring humility.
Every. Single. Photo. Looks like a postcard.
2 PM: Lunch at camp. Vegetarian. Surprisingly good.
3 PM – 5 PM: Rest in your tent. Read. Nap. Stare at nothing. This is the wellness part people pay ₹10K for at spas.
5:30 PM: Walk around camp. Chat with other travelers. Shared desert experiences bond people.
6 PM: Sunset from the desert (better than from the fort because you’re literally inside it).
7 PM: Bonfire. Local musicians. Stories. Someone will tell you something real.
8 PM: Dinner. Around the bonfire. Vegetarian. Tasty. Everyone eats together.
9 PM: Sleep under more stars than you knew existed. The Milky Way is visible. Bring a blanket. Lie down. Forget your phone.
Day 3: Jodhpur & Return
9 AM: Drive to Jodhpur (5 hours).
2 PM: Explore Mehrangarh Fort (bigger than Jaisalmer). The view from the top is insane.
4 PM: Wander the blue city. Old Jodhpur is painted blue. Get lost. Buy nothing you need.
6 PM: Train home. Sleep the entire way.

THE RAJASTHAN HACK (Save More Money)
Travel October-November:
Not too hot. Not too cold. Clear skies. Same prices as summer.
Avoid May-June:
45°C is not a vibe. Your phone will overheat.
Book guesthouses directly:
Call the hotel. Skip Booking.com. Negotiate 20% discount.
Eat where locals eat:
The best food is never in restaurants. It’s in the dhaba. In someone’s home. In the market.
Skip “luxury” camps:
Budget camps = same stars, same bonfire, same magic. The only difference is thread count.
Talk to locals:
They’ll tell you about secret wells, hidden temples, family-run restaurants nobody tourists know.
THE UNEXPECTED DISCOVERIES
1. Silence
No honking. No notifications. Just wind. Desert. Your thoughts. It’s unsettling at first. Addictive by day 3.
2. Genuine Conversations
The camel guide will tell you about his kids. His dreams. Why he stayed when his friends left the village. These conversations cost zero rupees and mean everything.
3. Stargazing
More stars than you knew possible. Download Star Map app. Lie on the desert. Realize you’re small. Come home humbled.
4. Photography Hack
Golden hour in the desert isn’t just better. It’s different. Every angle is a magazine cover. You’ll become obsessed.
5. Food Nostalgia
You’ll taste spice combinations you can’t replicate at home. You’ll try. You’ll fail. You’ll come back.
